history of development

several dams built during nineteenth century prevent flooding on left bank of rhône, in particular flood of 1856. grand camp dam (digue du grand camp) built in 1859.


modern development

in 1984, lyon fair moved original location upstream of quays of rhône near parc de la tete d or chassieu become eurexpo. vacant land used build cité internationale, includes musée d art contemporain de lyon, cinemas, auditorium, palais des congrès de lyon , global headquarters of interpol.

the modern berges du rhône developed aim of creating space relaxation , leisure activities including paths walking , cycling along rhône. space created eliminating parking spaces. developed area covers area of 10 hectares (25 acres), on distance of 5 kilometres (3.1 miles), parc de la tête d or parc de gerland.


in 2001 lyon city planning agency developed scope statement outlining goals project, included removing parking spaces , introducing flood reduction measures. project cost estimated €15.5 million @ time. in 2002 city released design project.


a development team chosen in 2003, , consultation phase began same year. during consultation phase, municipal opposition criticized removal of parking spaces on banks of rhône , replacement paid parking garages. in second quarter of 2004, project presented in final version. budget of €44 million finalized project.


in 2005 work began eliminating parking along rhône , constructing several dolphin structures mooring barges. work completed during 3rd , 4th quarter of 2007.


later development

on right bank parc saint-clair created, stretches along river entrance saint-clair poincaré bridge.


construction of 220-metre (720-foot) long passerelle de la paix began in march 2012 , completed in 2013, linking caluire , cité internationale.
