the history of fat acceptance movement can dated 1967 when 500 people met in new york s central park protest against anti-fat bias. sociologist charlotte cooper has argued history of fat activist movement best understood in waves, similar feminist movement, believes closely tied. cooper believes fat activists have suffered similar waves of activism followed burnout, activists in following wave unaware of history of movement, resulting in lack of continuity.


first wave

second wave

in second wave, fat acceptance movement became more widespread in usa , started spread other countries. ideas movement began appear in mainstream. publishers became more willing publish fat acceptance themed literature.


by 1990s, input fat acceptance movement began incorporated research papers members of medical professions such new anti-dieting programs , models of obesity management.


the 1980s witnessed increase in activist organizations, publications, , conferences. in 1989 group of people including actress anne zamberlan formed first french organisation fat acceptance, allegro fortissimo.


organisations began holding conferences , conventions, including naafa.


third wave

the fat acceptance movement has seen diversification of projects during third wave. activities have addressed issues of both fat , race, class, sexuality , other issues. size discrimination has been increasingly addressed in arts, well. performance art groups such pretty porky & pissed off, padded lilies, water ballet troupe of large sized women, big moves , fat bottom revue, big burlesque touring show founded fat activist, heather macallister, leftovers, ups & downs of compulsive eater , among others, intentionally feature fat people in shows.
