the 2 ships of minas geraes class 543 feet (166 m) overall, 530 feet (160 m) @ waterline, , 500 feet (150 m) between perpendiculars. had beam of 83 feet (25 m), mean draft of 25 feet (7.6 m), maximum draft of 28 feet (8.5 m), normal displacement of 18,976 long tons (19,281 t), , displacement of 20,900 long tons (21,200 t) @ full load. @ beginning of careers, ships crewed 900 men.

minas geraes , são paulo armed twelve 12-inch/45 caliber, twenty-two 4.7-inch/50 caliber, eighteen 3-pounders , 8 1-pounder naval guns. main battery arranged 4 superfiring turrets, 2 each fore , aft, , 2 placed en echelon. 4.7-inch secondary guns placed in casemates along side of ship.

the propulsion of 2 ships provided vickers vertical triple expansion engines instead of steam turbines being used power contemporary dreadnoughts. eighteen boilers provided power engines, in turn rotated 2 three-bladed propellers 23,500 shaft horsepower. designed top speed 21 knots (24 mph; 39 km/h), though unattainable in later careers owing substandard maintenance , neglect. ships carry 2,350 tonnes (2,310 long tons) of coal , 400 tonnes (390 long tons) of oil, , original endurance 10,000 nautical miles (12,000 mi; 19,000 km) when traveling @ 10 knots (12 mph; 19 km/h). during trials, minas geraes able steam @ 22.29 knots (25.65 mph; 41.28 km/h).

the main armor belt krupp cemented , nine inches (230 mm) thick, narrowed 6 , 3 inches (150 , 76 mm) closer each end of ships. barbettes protected nine-inch armor, while turret had twelve-inch (300 mm) front, eight-inch (200 mm) sides, , two- three-inch (51 to 76 mm) top, , conning tower had twelve-inch armor. deck armor had multiple decks of one-and-a-half two inches (38 to 51 mm), one inch (25 mm), , one inch.
