remembered 1 of generous philanthropists of time, stephen sought no accolades gestures , directed majority of fortune towards hospitals. in 1890, , first cousin, lord strathcona, purchased frothingham estate in golden square mile site royal victoria hospital. gave purchase city of montreal caveat land , buildings must ever used education , healing. contributed $500,000 each construction , after opened in 1893 gave further $500,000 each in stock establish endowment fund maintain it.
