the town named first time in manuscript of 813 in farfa register; starting in 844 balentanu appears in other documents of abbey of san salvatore on mt. amiata. land inhabited in prehistoric times, , important finds in lake mezzano , near mt. becco, mt. saliette, poggi del mulino , mt. starnina seem confirm theories of historians, identify lake lake of statonia (lacus statoniensis) described seneca in naturales quaestiones , pliny elder (ii.209, xiv.67 , xxxvi.168).


the farnese

in renaissance period, town fell under dominion of farnese family: them valentano owes fortress (rocca) , many of churches.


in 1649, when town of castro, capital of duchy of castro, destroyed, valentano became natural center of castrense region , custodian of archives.


modern times

in june 1944, artillery shell exploded in portonaccio gate, killing 7 civilians had taken shelter in it. gate witness tragedy, since 1 of stones missing, in 2004 plaque placed in via trento e trieste commemorate local victims of world war ii.
