since 1988, workers party has grown in popularity on national stage winning elections in many of largest brazilian cities, such são paulo, fortaleza, belo horizonte, porto alegre, , goiânia, in important states, such rio grande sul, espírito santo, , federal district. winning streak culminated victory of presidential candidate, lula in 2002, succeeded fernando henrique cardoso of brazilian social democracy party (partido da social democracia brasileira – psdb). psdb, defense of economic liberalism, party s main electoral rival, democrats, heir of national renewal alliance party (aliança renovadora nacional – arena), ruling party during military dictatorship. along socialist people s party (partido popular socialista – pps), dissidence of brazilian communist party (partido comunista brasileiro – pcb), form centre-right opposition lula administration.


1989 presidential elections



in 1989 general elections, lula surprisingly went second round fernando collor de mello. though center , left-wing candidates of first round united around lula s candidacy, collor s campaign supported mass media (notably rede globo, seen on documentary beyond citizen kane) , lula lost in second round close margin of 5.7%.


1994 , 1998 general elections



leading 1994 general elections, lula leading presidential candidate in majority of polls. result, centrist , right-wing parties openly united fernando henrique cardoso s candidacy. cardoso, minister of economy, created real plan, established new currency , subsequently ended inflation , provided economic stability. result, cardoso won election in first round 54% of votes. however, has been noted elections not complete disaster pt, increased presence in congress , elected first time 2 state governors . cardoso re-elected in 1998.


2002 general elections



after detrition of psdb s image , result of economic crisis burst in final years of cardoso s government, lula won 2002 presidential election in second round on 52 million votes, becoming voted president in history, surpassing ronald reagan. however, lula s record surpassed george w. bush (in re-election campaign) , barack obama (both presidential campaigns).


2006 general elections



on 29 october 2006, workers party won 83 seats in chamber of deputies , 11 seats in senate. lula re-elected more 60% of votes, extending position president of brazil until 1 january 2011.


the workers party second largest party in chamber of deputies, fourth largest party in senate, , has 5 state governorships. however, gained control of 1 among ten richest states (bahia).


2010 general elections

in 2010 general elections, held on 3 october, pt gained control of 17.15% of seats in chamber of deputies, record party since 2002. 88 seats gained, became largest party in lower chamber first time ever. pt became second largest party in federal senate first time, after electing of 11 senators, making total of 14 senators 2010–2014 legislature. national coalition gained control of 311 seats in lower house , 50 seats in upper house, broad majority in both houses lula administration never had. election saw decrease in number of seats controlled centre-right opposition bloc; shrank 133 111 deputies. left-wing opposition, formed psol, retained control of 3 seats.


the party expected elect presidential candidate dilma rousseff in first round. however, not able receive necessary amount of valid votes (over 50%) , second round, in scored 56% of votes, took place on 31 october 2010. on 1 january 2011, inaugurated , became first female head of government ever in history of brazil, , first de facto female head of state since death of maria i, queen of united kingdom of portugal, brazil , algarves, in 1816.


also in 2010 elections pt retained control of governorships of bahia, sergipe, , acre, in addition gaining control of rio grande sul , federal district. nevertheless, lost control of pará. candidates supported party won race in amapá, ceará, espírito santo, maranhão, mato grosso, pernambuco, piauí, , rio de janeiro, means pt participate in 13 out of 27 state governorships.
