background

the district landlocked district in centre of state of kelantan in north east of malaysia. land hilly, , before 20th century entire area tropical rain forest. territory contains confluence of 2 major rivers, lebir , galas, form kelantan river, flows 70 km northwards through 1 of densely populated flood plains on malay peninsula estuary in south china sea near state capital of kota bharu.


as transport links improved during 20th century, people moved area take advantage of abundant land available farming. railway constructed in 1920s through undeveloped interior of malaysia link kelantan state main centres of population on west coast. line ran through kuala krai territory, , settlements became established along route. road links followed, , towns , villages grew cater agricultural population. rubber production increasingly important throughout malaysia, , many rubber tree plantations set in area. later, country-wide shift oil palm in 1970s , 1980s saw establishment of oil palm plantations in territory, of replaced rubber.


kuala krai part of ulu kelantan until split out following re-delineation in 1974. kuala krai formally gained district administration in 1977.

daerah dabong (844.5 km²) 27 villages
